Beat SCAD is a patient-led charity that aims to support Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) patients and their families, raise awareness of SCAD and raise funds for research into the condition. Our mission is threefold: Awareness, Support and Research.
We want to:
- Raise awareness of SCAD among medical professionals and those who have had a SCAD diagnosis
- Provide support for SCAD patients as well as family and friends
- Raise funds for research
SCAD is an under-diagnosed heart condition that can’t currently be predicted or prevented. (For more see http://beatscad.org.uk/what-is-scad)
The majority of cases are in young- to middle-aged women. SCAD patients have few or none of the traditional risk factors associated with heart disease (atherosclerosis). More research is needed to understand why fit, healthy people suddenly develop SCAD.
SCAD can be fatal, cause heart failure, cardiac arrest, require heart bypass surgery, stents or medical management.
Dr David Adlam, who is leading the UK research, explains SCAD in this video.
